Are Court Records Public in St. Louis County?

St. Louis County court records are available to the public. The Missouri Sunshine Act is a series of state laws that determine all aspects of public records in St. Louis. For example, the law empowers the clerk of courts to keep and issue copies of court records to public members.

The state laws also require record custodians to withhold records that may violate a record subject’s right to security and privacy. For this reason, personal medical information is not available in court records. Other exempt court documents include:

  • Court documents classified as “exempt” under state or federal laws or court orders.
  • Communication between attorneys and their clients
  • Personal-identifying data, such as social security numbers, credit card details, and driver’s licenses
  • Records of cases that were dismissed or not found guilty due to mental health
  • Welfare cases pertaining to identifiable case parties.

St. Louis County Court Records Search

St. Louis County court records are accessible through online, mail, or in-person requests to record custodians. In this context, the term “custodian” refers to local and state government agencies. For instance, the Missouri state courts maintain a statewide online search portal for court records. The St. Louis County clerk of the circuit court is also a custodian of court records filed at the county courts. The agency allows walk-in access to court records in their custody.

St. Louis County Court Records Search by Name

Record seekers can conduct name-based searches for court records via the Missouri Court’s Case.Net portal. To access the search option, requesters must select the “Litigant Name Search” option.

In contrast, St. Louis County’s Municipal Court also maintains an online search portal for traffic and criminal court records. To view records on the site, requesters must choose “Find My Case" and then proceed to input the case party’s name.

St. Louis County District Court Records

In St. Louis County, the circuit court oversees cases typically found in district courts. The county court hears criminal and civil-type cases like felonies, small claims, misdemeanors, and ordinance violations.

St. Louis Circuit Court, via the Certified Copy Department, allows walk-in access to criminal and civil court records. To obtain court records, requesters must submit the following information:

  • The case number
  • Name of case parties
  • The type of copy being requested (certified or non-certified copies)
  • Title of the requested document
  • The case filing date or judgment date (if known)

St. Louis court records cost $0.30 per page and an additional $1.50 for certification.

Missouri’s Case.Net is an alternative resource for obtaining court records in St. Louis. This is a searchable database that offers access to court records through different search options.

St. Louis County Criminal Records

St. Louis criminal records contain histories of arrests and criminal convictions. These reports are available at the St. Louis County Police Department. The department offers access to criminal records via fingerprint-based searches. To obtain criminal records from the department, requesters must take these steps:

  1. Register with the Missouri Automated Criminal History System.
  2. Fill out the required information to generate a transaction control number or a UEID pre-enrollment code.
  3. During registration, you may book an appointment with the county police department or the nearest IdentoGo site.
  4. Next, visit a designated IdentoGo site or the Bureau of Central Police records at the County Police Department.
  5. Sign in on the agency's tablets, then select “IdentoGo” and “Appointment”. You can only choose an appointment if you scheduled it during registration.
  6. Stay in the waiting area until the bureau attends to your request.

Note: At the Bureau of Central Police Records, you must provide your TCN or UEID code, a valid ID, and the required fees via credit card.

On the other hand, you can find St. Louis County criminal records through the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The agency allows online and mail access to criminal history information including St. Louis County Arrest Records. To view the records online, record seekers must create an account on the agency’s search portal. However, you must provide these documents when requesting via mail:

  • Completed criminal record check form (SHP-158)
  • There is a $15 and $20 fee for name or fingerprint-based checks, respectively. The fees must be in the form of money orders or checks payable to the “State of Missouri—Criminal Record System Fund”.
  • A completed fingerprint card. You can get it at the local law enforcement agency.

Get St. Louis County Civil Court Records

Civil court records contain records of lawsuits and disputes handled at the circuit court. These records are public documents and are obtainable at the office of the circuit court clerk.

To get the records, the requester must visit the court clerk and provide information about the court case. The required search data must include the case party’s name, case number, filing date, or judgment date. Note that you don’t need to provide all the details to get records from the court’s clerk.

Missouri’s Case.Net portal is also an alternative source for accessing St. Louis County civil court records. Requesters may choose to search the records via different search options on the online portal.

St. Louis County Family Court Records

The Family Court Division of the Circuit Court hears family-related court cases. Court cases under this category include adoption, divorce, child visitation, termination of parental rights, and paternity.

That said, the clerk of court is legally required to keep records of family court cases filed at the circuit court. Also, the court issues copies of the records to eligible parties. Those eligible to receive the record are the record subjects, immediate family members, and legal representatives.

To obtain family court records in St. Louis County, record seekers may search the records online or in person at the circuit clerk’s office. You must provide the case number, case party’s name, or filing date to get the records.

Note: Family court records may contain data exempt under the Sunshine Law. In such situations, the court will only disclose non-confidential data to public members.

St. Louis Dissolution of Marriage Records
